What’s Life? Exploring Our Inner Journey and Universe

People walking through life, symbolizing the diverse inner journeys and universes that reside within each individual, as they navigate through the thrill or mundanity of daily life.

On a recent walk in the park, I made a conscious effort to acknowledge every person I passed, silently recognizing their unique inner worlds. This awareness brought a genuine smile to my face, which some returned, creating brief but meaningful connections. In that moment of shared recognition, we transcended our separate existences.

In our everyday actions, whether simple, complex, mundane or thrilling, there lies a deeper journey within us that fuels our existence. This inner journey, often overlooked amidst our daily routines, is the essence of what it truly means to live.

Lately, as I navigate through spaces, encountering people, our interactions range from brief glances to deliberate avoidance, to those lost in their own worlds, oblivious to the immediate surroundings. In these special moments, I perceive more than just physical entities; I see profound inner worlds at play.

Each of us, engaged in various activities—fulfilling duties, seeking pleasures, or simply existing—carries an entire universe within. But how often do we truly acknowledge this inner realm, even in the midst of the most ordinary tasks?

Viewing others through this lens of inner worlds fosters a deep sense of empathy and adoration, mirroring the compassion we hold for our own journeys. You'll notice the myriad ways people express their inner selves: some with a joyful ease, others with a guarded distance, and still others seemingly disconnected, ensnared in their own thoughts and feelings. All beautiful!

This perspective becomes especially meaningful in daily interactions with those close to us. By observing their actions and reactions, you can gain some insight, touching only the surface of their internal experiences. When people complain, sigh or even want to teach you what they see or know as right, you are suddenly seeing all of their impulses as part of their inner experiences. Each person's unique expression becomes endearing, reflective of the complex inner worlds they navigate.

Embracing this view transforms our interactions. Even when tasks demand our attention, the instinct to connect, to share the love that underpins our existence, prevails. This is the space where love flows freely, where every encounter is a meeting of souls, an exchange of the love that is our fundamental truth.

This blog is lovingly dedicated to my parents, my sister G, my life partner H, and the incredibly special M, Simm, S, and K. Together, we've embarked on a heartfelt exploration of our inner worlds, embracing vulnerability and compassion at every step.

Sumana’s Blog

Beautiful — Susana’s thoughtful, well-written, and sensitive commentary arrived at just the right time for me. I will adapt your idea of walking in the park with a new perspective when I teach kinesthetic empathy to my dance/movement therapy students.
