Why Do I Struggle To Do The Things I Want To Do

Updated: Jan 6

Hello, beautiful souls! Writing, for me, is a way of digesting and expressing the constant learning I engage in from the world around me. This piece expresses some of my thoughts on effortless actions and those that require effort.

Let’s dive into the concept of actions — some that come effortlessly, like a natural rhythm aligning with our deepest desires, and others that seem to require monumental effort.

We’ve all experienced activities that flow seamlessly, almost like second nature. Take my partner, Hardik, who recently embraced training as a triathlete. For nearly a year, waking up at 4:30 AM for intense training has been as effortless as breathing for him. Similarly, homeschooling my son has been a breeze for me because it aligns with my vision of him thriving.

Effortlessness in actions often signifies a deeper knowing within us. This knowing, or alignment to ‘What I Want,’ might be conscious or subconscious. Hardik, for a significant period, didn’t consciously acknowledge why training was effortless for him while other personal projects seemed to require so much effort to see through and were more often than not left hanging.

Understanding this effortless flow can reveal profound insights. It’s about recognising the alignment between these actions and our true desires. So, I invite you to reflect on your life — what do you do effortlessly? What tasks resonate with your innermost desires?

Now, let’s explore the flip side — the struggles, the unfinished projects, and the inconsistency in showing up for things we’ve planned. Why do we beat ourselves up about these challenges?

The key lies in understanding what we genuinely want and why. It’s about aligning with our inner desires and visualizing ourselves as individuals capable of achieving them. Sometimes, struggles arise from society-influenced ideas that we have set as goals for ourselves rather than authentic, self-driven desires. For instance, aspiring for a fit body might be influenced by societal standards rather than a genuine sense of self and could be the primary reason one can’t see through the pre-decided diet plan or workout plan. While it may seem most natural to desire a fit body, that desire may not yet be in alignment with one’s self-image, coming from a conviction that I can be nothing else but fit in my body and any other expression of me in my body doesn’t seem like me; doesn’t ‘fit’ me.

In other cases, the struggle may stem from internal clutter obstructing the path to organic, effortless action. For example, wanting financial success through a passion project may face obstacles through serious self-doubt or doubt about its monetisation potential, and therefore never pursued seriously or simply pursued as a hobby. Internal dialogue questioning whether our passion can truly bring the rewards envisioned can lead to procrastination and effort-laden pursuits where one has already drifted away from the original desire of expressing one’s passion in the world.

Ultimately, whether it’s a lack of clarity of ‘What I Want’ or lack of belief in my potential to manifest what I want, the solution lies in self-connection. Pause, check-in, connect with your authentic self who knows who you really are and therefore what you really want. Strengthen your understanding of your inner desires and eliminate the clutter hindering your will for action.

The journey to effortless action begins with a deep connection to oneself. It’s about recognising what truly resonates with you and understanding why.
